Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Wins the Development Environments Category and Google Android Wins the Mobile Development Category at the Great Indian Developer Awards 2012

Gerard Rego Delivers Keynote “The GDP Going Mobile – 2.0 of the Industry” on the second day of Great Indian Developer Summit 2012

Bangalore, April 18, 2012: The second day of the country’s biggest ever annual summit for the IT developer ecosystem “The Great Indian Developers Summit” organized by Saltmarch Media witnessed the announcement of the much awaited Great Indian Developer Awards 2012 at the prestigious Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. In its fifth year running, the Great Indian Developer Awards recognize the product and innovation excellence of hundreds of software products and tools that aid developer productivity, across 11 different categories. The selection criteria applied by an international stature panel places emphasis on functionality, usability, innovation excellence, bleeding-edge quotient, and feedback from the developer ecosystem.

The key highlight of day two of GIDS 2012 also included the keynote address on “GDP Going Mobile – 2.0 of the Industry” by Gerard Rego, Head of Ecosystem & Developer Experience at Nokia, India. Addressing the audience, he said, “India like many countries such as BRIC skipped the mainframe, PC and internet revolution and went directly to the mobile! The role of mobile and telecommunications has a direct impact of GDP growth as research indicates. The 1.0 of the mobile industry was unbundling of products and services via marketplaces. The 2.0 will see for countries such as BRIC where fragmentation and micro-scale of demand and supply chains from kirana (mom & pop) stores, agriculture and healthcare to governance, big business and to education going mobile.”

The other interesting highlight of day two was the talk by Alan Wong, Reasearch In Motion’s Developer Relations Lead. He spoke on creating killer mobile apps using web technologies. He spoke about how to transform existing web assets into a standalone rich application that can maintain the look and feel, and functionality of a native mobile application, yet easily support smartphones, tablets and beyond.

The other key speakers on day two of the event included Venkat Subramaniam, the Author of '.NET Gotchas', 'Practices of an Agile Developer' and 'Programming Groovy', who spoke on “Rediscovering JavaScript” Scott Davis, Java RockStar and Author of 'Groovy Recipes', who spoke on “HTML5 in Your Pocket: Application Cache And Local Storage”, joint presentation by Harish Vaidyanathan, Head, Evagenlism Efforts, Micorsoft India and Ujjwal Kumar, Developer Evangelist, Microsoft on “The Windows Ecosystem,” amongst others.

The Great Indian Developer Awards 2012 Winners across the various product categories included:

  3. Security Category: Microsoft Security Essentials was the winner

  6. Change and Configuration Management Category: CollabNet TeamForge was the winner
  7. Web Development Category: Dojo ToolKit was the winner
  8. Databases Category: Oracle Database 11g was the winner
  9. Content Management Category: Microsoft SharePoint 2010 was the winner
  10. Testing Category: JBoss Profiler was the winner
  11. Mobile Development Category: Google Android was the winner

The four-day summit features a convergence of three on-the-radar co-located conferences – GIDS.NET, GIDS.WEB, GIDS.JAVA -- and a dedicated day for hands-on workshops – GIDS.WORKSHOPS. The GIDS 2012 program offers incisive insight through keynotes, focused sessions, hands-on workshops, chalk talks, and Birds of Feather (BoF) discussions.
